Correspondent, 23 October: The Indian cricket team faces a significant setback ahead of their second T20 match against New Zealand, as explosive batsman Ishan Kishan has been ruled out of the upcoming game due to an injury sustained in the series opener. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) officially announced the change in the squad regarding his unavailability.
Detailing the nature of the issue through a formal statement, the BCCI announced, "Ishan Kishan has been ruled out of the second T20 International against New Zealand. He suffered a minor injury to his right adductor muscle during the first T20 International of the series. The BCCI medical team is monitoring his condition."
During the first match held in Christchurch, India secured a winning start to the series by successfully chasing down a target of 226 runs. In that game, Kishan, who typically bats at number three, dropped down to the number five position while Tilak Varma was promoted in his place. The reason behind this batting order alteration was unknown at the time. Kishan struggled to make an impact with the bat, managing to score just a single run from three deliveries.
Kishan, currently the number one ranked batsman in T20s, remains a crucial asset in the format. Following his return to the squad after an extended absence, he stands as the highest run-getter in T20 Internationals this year. Over 35 matches, he has amassed 1,159 runs with an average of 36 and a strike rate of 171, hitting one century and seven half-centuries. Additionally, according to available information, he was India's second-highest run-scorer after Sanju Samson in the 2026 T20 World Cup.
Yesterday's series opener featured standout batting displays from Sanju Samson and Naman Dhir, with the Indian team discovering a new match-winner in Dhir. With Kishan now unavailable, Vaibhav Suryavanshi is set to receive an opportunity in the forthcoming match, presenting an exciting prospect for fans to watch him play on the field.
