Correspondent, 23 October: India registered a resounding four-wicket victory over New Zealand in the first T20 International match. Despite setting up a massive total of 225 runs, New Zealand suffered a defeat. Following the match, Kiwi captain Mitchell Santner held India's aggressive batting, particularly Sanju Samson's explosive hitting during the powerplay, responsible for the loss. Santner noted that the contest was highly thrilling and the outcome could have favored either side.
Expressing satisfaction with his team's batting performance, Santner stated that their top-order batters adapted excellently, even with early pitch moisture and assistance for the bowlers. Glenn Phillips subsequently stabilized the innings in the middle order, and Bevvon Jacobs' aggressive strokeplay propelled New Zealand to 225. Santner mentioned the team was very happy with this total. He also provided an update on his own health, clarifying that he is fine after sustaining minor neck and head injuries during the match.
Addressing India's chase of the 226-run target, Santner admitted they were aware the Indian team would apply pressure right from the outset. "They batted brilliantly in the powerplay once again. We didn't bowl our best and made many mistakes," he stated. While acknowledging that the New Zealand bowlers made a solid comeback in the middle overs to restrict the scoring rate and take the game to the end, he conceded that the Indian batters taking full advantage of the powerplay ultimately proved decisive.
Speaking on improvements for the upcoming matches, Santner emphasized the need to control the extra runs conceded early in the innings. He noted that while taking catches is difficult at this venue, their fielding was very good. Describing bowling to the Indian team in the powerplay as a constant major challenge, he added, "We will have to find a way to slow down their run rate. Even if they play aggressively, our goal will be to limit their powerplay score to 80 runs instead of 100. We will learn from these mistakes in the second match." This analysis makes it clear that Santner views Samson, who altered the complexion of the match with his rapid powerplay batting, as the primary architect of their defeat.
