Correspondent, 25 October: In a move designed to provide relief to ordinary citizens and small traders, the government is preparing to introduce significant modifications to the Goods and Services Tax (GST) procedures. These upcoming adjustments aim to simplify GST-related tasks, with the changes likely to come into effect from November 1, 2026.

Currently, navigating the complexities of the GST system requires small traders and the general public to seek assistance from Chartered Accountants (CAs) or other experts. The government has initiated steps to resolve this hurdle. The new regulations received official approval during the 57th GST Council meeting conducted on October 8. A phased implementation of this decision is set to commence starting this coming November.

Under the updated rules, the GST registration process will become more straightforward. The government may issue clear directives concerning the mandatory documentation and procedural steps. Filling out applications on the GST portal has become easier, which will reduce the rate of application rejections stemming from incomplete documents or inaccurate information. Additionally, this development will pave the way for traders to receive their tax refunds more quickly.

Approximately 9.5 lakh small sellers operating on e-commerce platforms stand to gain the maximum benefit from these adjustments. Based on the new provision, if a small trader lacks their own office in a particular state, they can officially register the e-commerce company’s warehouse as their principal place of business with the government.

However, to utilize this facility, it is mandatory for the respective trader to have an operational business in at least one state. The registration process in another state can then be completed with the consent of the e-commerce platform. Small traders are currently welcoming the government's new modifications, and it will be important to observe the exact extent of the benefits these rules deliver following their actual implementation.
