Correspondent, 23 October: Following New Zealand's defeat in the first T20 match against India, all-rounder Glenn Phillips praised the opposition's performance but lost his temper when questioned about his team's fielding. India secured a resounding victory by successfully chasing a record target of 226 runs with four wickets remaining.
Batting first, New Zealand had set a massive total of 225 runs. Analyzing the reasons behind the loss, Phillips pointed to lackluster bowling during the middle overs. "In the middle overs, we fell short in creating pressure on India. If we had bowled some dot balls and taken one or two wickets, maybe India wouldn't have been able to cross this challenge and the match result would have been different," he stated.
Phillips expressed regret over the team's failure to execute their on-field plans against the aggressive style of the Indian batters, emphasizing that strategies made on paper must be implemented at the right time. However, he offered high praise for the opposing team, noting that the Indian batters skillfully handled the extra bounce present on the pitch.
When asked about dropped catches after the game, Phillips flared up. He explained, "Every missed opportunity cannot be a 'dropped catch'. To take a catch, it is necessary for the hand to reach the ball." He further highlighted that dropping catches is simply a part of the game. The situation made it clear that despite Phillips' good start, New Zealand will need to focus on taking middle-over wickets and building pressure on opponents in their upcoming matches.
