Correspondent, 20 October: Following the conclusion of Ajit Agarkar's tenure, the BCCI has officially handed over the leadership of the men's selection committee to former spinner Pragyan Ojha. Under Ojha's leadership, another former spinner, Ramesh Powar, has been appointed as a new member of the selection panel.
Initially, former cricketer Wasim Jaffer was considered a much stronger contender for the chief selector post. According to the existing selection process, the member from a zone who has played the highest number of Test matches is typically regarded as the leading candidate for the chairman's role. Jaffer has played 31 Test matches, whereas Pragyan Ojha has featured in only 24.
Jaffer had formally applied for the position and possessed greater Test experience, prompting questions as to why the role was assigned to Ojha instead. It has now come to light that the sheer number of Test matches is no longer considered the final criterion for this appointment. The decision was reached through the internal procedures of the BCCI and the Cricket Advisory Committee, which includes Ashok Malhotra and Jatin Paranjape.
Pragyan Ojha received substantial backing within the BCCI's internal committee. A firm opinion prevailed among many in the BCCI that Ojha should be appointed as the chairman of the selection committee, and this solid support was the primary reason he was chosen over Jaffer. Additionally, newly selected member Ramesh Powar brings valuable coaching experience to the table, having previously guided the women's team to medals in the Asia Cup and the Commonwealth Games.
Meanwhile, the tenure of the previous chief selector, Ajit Agarkar, was a subject of immense discussion. During his leadership over the past few years, India captured three ICC trophies alongside several major championship titles. However, his tenure also saw significant changes within the Indian squad. Players such as Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and Ravichandran Ashwin had to retire, a development that led to Agarkar facing massive trolling.
