Correspondent, 19 October: Playing for Mizoram in the Ranji Trophy 2026-27 season, 29-year-old Chinmay Sutar has played a historic unbeaten innings of 400 runs. He has become only the second batter in the history of the tournament to cross the 400-run mark in a single innings, achieving this feat after a gap of 77 years. His monumental record was crucially supported by the team's number eleven batter.

The tournament is currently in its second round of matches. Competing in the Plate Group against Nagaland at Sovima, Sutar accomplished this milestone on Monday. He advanced his innings from 181 runs during the third session of the second day. Playing aggressively, he completed his unbeaten 400-run knock off 517 balls, smashing 46 fours and 7 sixes. Following his massive score, Mizoram declared their innings at 581 for 9.

The contribution of number eleven batter Lalrempuia Chhakchhuak proved decisive in Sutar's historic knock. Chhakchhuak arrived at the crease when Mizoram was struggling at 392 for 9. Holding his ground at one end, he scored an unbeaten 14 runs off 76 balls. With Sutar continuing his attacking stroke play from the other end, the duo stitched together a massive 189-run partnership for the final wicket.

Sutar made his first-class debut earlier this month. During his inaugural match against Manipur, he scored 35 runs in the first innings and 99 runs in the second. Additionally, he played his first List A match for Mumbai against Maharashtra in the Vijay Hazare Trophy in January this year, scoring just 2 runs before being dismissed. That Mumbai squad included prominent players such as Yashasvi Jaiswal, Musheer Khan, Tushar Deshpande, Siddhesh Lad, and Shardul Thakur. Furthermore, Sutar represented the India Emerging team in the Asian Cricket Council's Emerging Teams Cup in 2019.

In the history of the Ranji Trophy, the record for the highest individual score in an innings belongs to B. B. Nimbalkar, who amassed an unbeaten 443 runs during the 1948-49 season. With his 400-run feat, Chinmay Sutar has now secured the second position. The all-time list follows with Prithvi Shaw (379) in third, Sanjay Manjrekar (377) fourth, M. V. Sridhar (366) fifth, Tanay Agarwal (366) sixth, Vijay Merchant (359 not out) seventh, Samit Gohel (359 not out) eighth, and V. V. S. Laxman (353) in ninth place.
