Correspondent, 18 October: Following the conclusion of the five-match T20 series between India and the West Indies, Indian T20 vice-captain Tilak Varma shared detailed thoughts on his shifting batting order and new responsibilities. The final match of the series had to be abandoned halfway through due to rain, resulting in a 2-2 draw. Throughout this series, the Indian team's batting and bowling did not appear very effective.
Speaking after the match, Varma acknowledged that directly dropping from the number three spot to bat at number five or six is not easy. However, he expressed confidence in facing this new challenge by improving his skills and focusing on mental preparation. "From a batsman's perspective, I find it much easier to play at number three," he stated. "But looking at the top-order batting lineup in the current team, I will have to bat at number five or six."
Varma pointed out that Ishan is currently playing excellently at the number three position. "In such a situation, I have no other option left but to play my role for the team by batting at number five or six," he said. "I am mentally prepared for this role. While playing at this position in the last few matches, I have also secured victories for the team, so I will perform well in the future too."
The vice-captain clarified that failing to adapt to this new role would only increase difficulties. He explained that when coming in to bat at number five or six in a T20 game, there are frequently only five or six overs remaining. As a finisher, he noted, a player must be capable of hitting a six even when the ball comes on slowly.
To meet these demands, Varma has made the necessary adjustments to his game, noting that he had also played a similar role during his childhood. Emphasizing his ability to hit shots to all parts of the ground, he clarified that he can adapt himself to play at any spot, whether it is number three or five. Following the match, he affirmed that with just a day or two of practice, he is fully prepared to take on any responsibility required by the team.
