Correspondent, 24 October: India secured a thrilling victory over New Zealand in the second T20 match played at the Hagley Oval in Eastchurch. However, an unexpected scene unfolded on the field the moment Nitish Kumar Reddy struck the winning shot. Before the players could even celebrate their triumph, security personnel rushed onto the ground and formed a tight protective circle around Nitish and his batting partner, Tilak Varma.
The intense vigilance from the security staff was triggered by an incident during the previous game. According to a post shared on the X (Twitter) account '@Cric_Mukku' on October 24, 2026, a fan had breached the field directly at the moment of victory in the prior match. While attempting to apprehend the pitch invader, a security guard slipped and sustained an injury. Learning from that experience, security personnel this time sprinted toward the pitch immediately after the winning stroke, securing the players before any fans could reach them. A video of this swift intervention is currently going viral on social media.
India's path to victory during the 181-run chase was far from simple. The team was struggling at 71 for 5 in 11 overs, with all the primary batsmen already back in the pavilion. On two separate occasions during the contest, the win predictor system displayed India's chances of winning at a mere 4 percent, while projecting a 96 percent probability for a New Zealand victory.
In this precarious situation, Naman Dhir received a lifeline and capitalized on it. Replicating his approach from the first match, he launched a fierce attack on the Kiwi bowlers, compiling a quick 31 runs off just 17 deliveries.
When Dhir was dismissed, the match briefly appeared to tilt back in New Zealand's favor. However, Tilak Varma and Nitish Reddy completely turned the tables in the final five overs. India needed 46 runs in the last 3 overs (18 balls) to win the game. Varma, who was at 10 runs off 9 balls at one stage, shifted gears aggressively. He smashed six boundaries and one six to finish with an explosive, unbeaten 51 runs off 26 balls. At the other end, Nitish Reddy sealed the victory by remaining not out on 26 runs from 13 deliveries.
For this powerful batting performance, Tilak Varma was honored with the 'Man of the Match' award. This marks the 26th instance in T20 cricket—including the IPL and other T20 fixtures—where Varma has remained unbeaten to guide his team to a successful run chase. He previously delivered a similar match-winning effort while chasing in the 2025 Asia Cup final against Pakistan, where he scored an unbeaten 69 runs to secure the title for his team.
