Correspondent, 18 October: Following his exclusion from the recently announced ODI and Test squads for the New Zealand tour, fast bowler Mohammed Shami has faced yet another setback. He has been left out of the Bengal playing XI announced for their second match of the Ranji Trophy. Bengal's second fixture is currently being played against Services.

Questions are being raised regarding the sudden exclusion of Shami, who picked up five wickets in the opening Ranji match. While no official information has been provided about the decision, there is a possibility that he has been rested due to an injury. According to a report, Shami was seen walking off the field with the team physio before the match against Services began. This indicates that his omission from the playing XI has no connection to his non-selection for the New Zealand tour.

Bengal started their season strongly with a nine-wicket victory over Delhi in the first match. During that game, Shami delivered a solid performance, taking four wickets in the first innings and one in the second, to finish with a total of five wickets. Despite such an impressive showing, surprise is being expressed over his omission from the New Zealand series.

On the other hand, Bhuvneshwar Kumar's comeback to the national side after a gap of four years had raised hopes regarding Shami's selection. However, missing out on the opportunity has left him feeling disappointed once again. Shami has been awaiting a return to the Indian team for many years and has been repeatedly proving himself.

Throughout his career, he has played 101 first-class matches, taking a total of 389 wickets. His impressive first-class record features taking five or more wickets on 15 occasions, as well as claiming more than 10 wickets in a single match twice.
