Correspondent, 24 October: Following a four-wicket defeat to India in the second T20 match at Hagley Oval, New Zealand captain Mitchell Santner pinpointed fielding lapses and a crucial dropped catch as the primary reasons for the loss. Chasing a target of 181 runs, India had slumped to a precarious 112 for 6 in the 15th over before staging a successful comeback from the brink of defeat to seal the victory.
Santner acknowledged the formidable nature of the Indian side, stating that minor errors can lead to a significant blow against such strong opponents. The captain noted that the match's outcome would have been decidedly different had his team held onto all their catches accurately. He added that securing just one more wicket during the closing stages would have virtually guaranteed a win for New Zealand. However, Santner explained that the Indian batters maintained exceptional control under pressure, ultimately compelling the bowlers into making mistakes.
The match slipped away from New Zealand largely due to the patient and crucial lower-order batting contributions from Tilak Varma, Naman Dhir, and Nitish Kumar Reddy. Santner conveyed deep frustration over the missed chances in the field, particularly when Bevan Jacobs dropped a simple catch from young batter Vaibhav Suryavanshi off the bowling of Michael Bracewell. Although Suryavanshi was eventually dismissed for just 4 runs, Santner's visible on-camera anger highlighted his belief that such sluggishness at critical moments proved extremely costly for the team.
Earlier, batting first, New Zealand faced a disappointing start by quickly losing their first three wickets. A 70-run innings from Glenn Phillips, alongside proper support from Bevan Jacobs, guided the team to a respectable total of 180 for 5 in their allotted 20 overs. Defending the total, Santner's effective spin bowling earned him four wickets and put India on the back foot. While praising his bowlers' strong performance in the initial overs, Santner also indicated that a player rotation policy would be utilized in the upcoming matches of the series to manage player fatigue.
