Correspondent, 20 October: The Indian squad has been announced for the upcoming Test series against New Zealand, which is scheduled to begin on November 19. Shubman Gill has been appointed as the captain for this tour, leading a team that features several young and experienced players. However, the exclusion of left-arm spinner Manav Suthar, who left a strong mark with his bowling on the recent tour of Sri Lanka, has sparked widespread surprise.
During the Sri Lanka tour, Suthar delivered a remarkable performance by dismissing 16 batters. Consistently taking wickets overseas highlights his skills and his ability to adapt to varying conditions. Despite such an impactful showing, he was completely ignored for the New Zealand tour, leading to questions over the selection committee's judgment.
Beyond his ability to spin the ball, Manav is recognized for his precise line and length, maintaining control to force batters into making errors. His bowling displays the patience, discipline, and constant pressure required to take wickets in Test cricket. His career numbers further demonstrate his potential; he has claimed 23 wickets in three Test matches at an average of 17.34 and an economy rate of 2.84. This record includes two five-wicket hauls and one 10-wicket match haul.
The pitches in New Zealand generally offer swing and seam movement, primarily assisting fast bowlers. Nevertheless, depending on the specific surface and situation, the role of spinners can shift, making them valuable options. While considering the opposition and pitch behavior is crucial for overseas assignments, the decision to overlook Suthar's 16 wickets in Sri Lanka has turned into a major talking point.
For the current New Zealand tour, the Indian squad features Ravindra Jadeja, Kuldeep Yadav, and Washington Sundar as the available spin-bowling alternatives. Jadeja is acknowledged for his immense experience and all-round skills. Kuldeep Yadav has secured a spot as the team's wrist spinner, whereas Washington Sundar offers off-spin bowling along with the ability to contribute as a batter.
