Correspondent, 17 October: While preparations for the upcoming IPL 2027 season are underway, the Mumbai Indians franchise has been dealt a major setback. Mahela Jayawardene has decided to step down from his position as the team's head coach. With his departure, the franchise will now have to search for a new head coach, despite there being considerable time left before the tournament begins.

This marked Jayawardene's second coaching stint with the Mumbai Indians. He previously held the head coach responsibility from 2017 to 2022. Following that, he was appointed for a second term spanning from 2024 to 2026. Under Jayawardene's guidance, the Mumbai Indians captured the IPL championship a total of three times.

The Mumbai Indians announced this decision through an official statement. The franchise noted that Jayawardene successfully fostered a positive environment within the squad during both of his tenures. Expressing their gratitude, the team highlighted that discipline, cooperation, and a "team-first" spirit were consistently kept at the forefront throughout his time with them.

After relinquishing the head coach role, Jayawardene also shared his thoughts. He described his journey with the Mumbai Indians team as very special. He extended special thanks to team owners Nita and Akash Ambani, the players, the support staff, and the fans for their backing throughout this journey. Furthermore, he conveyed his best wishes, expressing hope that the team will continue to progress in a similar manner in the future.
