Correspondent, 17 October: Major changes are unfolding within the camp of the five-time IPL champions, Mumbai Indians. Ahead of IPL 2027, head coach Mahela Jayawardene has resigned from his position. Following his exit, the franchise has accelerated its search for a replacement, and information indicates that a shortlist of five legendary figures has been drawn up for the new head coach role.
The race for the head coach position features a total of five individuals, including two Australian legends. The names currently under consideration are Michael Hussey, Aaron Finch, former England captain Eoin Morgan, former South African wicketkeeper Mark Boucher, and Adrian Birrell. While the interview process for the job is likely to commence on Sunday, the Mumbai Indians have not yet made any official announcement regarding the candidates.
Among the prospective contenders, Michael Hussey, famously known as 'Mr. Cricket', possesses extensive IPL experience from his time working with the coaching staff of the Chennai Super Kings. His expertise in refining batting and coordinating with players could prove highly beneficial for Mumbai. Meanwhile, Aaron Finch brings the experience of international captaincy, having led Australia to victory in the 2021 T20 World Cup, along with a strong capability to work alongside senior players. Eoin Morgan, who guided England to the 2019 ODI World Cup title, is also a prominent contender for the role.
Mark Boucher has previously managed the responsibility of head coach for the Mumbai Indians. Under his guidance, the team played the 2023 and 2024 seasons. The team reached the playoffs in 2023, though there was significant discussion surrounding the team's performance and a change in captaincy in 2024. Alongside him, Adrian Birrell is also considered a candidate for the coaching post, bringing vast experience from his international work with the South Africa and Ireland cricket teams.
Mahela Jayawardene worked with the Mumbai Indians across two distinct stints. During his initial tenure, the team captured championship titles in 2017, 2019, and 2020. He returned as head coach again in 2024. However, the team failed to deliver the expected performance over the past two seasons, with the Mumbai Indians finishing in fourth place in 2025 and ninth place in 2026. Now, the franchise is attempting to make robust preparations for the upcoming season under the guidance of a new coach.
